Having clean indoor air is important no matter what time of the year it is. While you may immediately think of ventilating your home properly during the summer, many of us prefer to seal our homes (or offices) to secure the heat in winter. This collects pollutants and moisture in, which results in poor indoor air quality.
So to help you get your home prepared for the colder months, we've come up with a list of handy hints on how to ensure that you're receiving a healthy dose of fresh indoor air from your heating and cooling system and other sources.
Clean Regularly
Your vacuum will help clean the air of pollutants and causes of mold, like dust mites and pet dander. It’s best to vacuum daily in high-traffic areas like kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways. Vacuum wool rugs regularly (every two weeks) to prevent them from attracting more dirt and dust than they can handle on their own.
Invest in a Humidifier
Winter can be a harsh season, especially for those who suffer from allergies or asthma. Airborne allergens, like mold spores and pet dander, can trigger symptoms in people with respiratory conditions.
Get your HVAC system up to snuff
If you have an older furnace or air conditioner, it may not be able to keep up with the demands of heating or cooling in your home during the winter months. Have a professional inspect your heating or cooling system and make sure it's operating at peak efficiency.
